The Cape Institute for Safe AI (CISAI), (registration name: CISAI NPC) is a South African non-profit organisation focused on building AI safety capacity. CISAI runs fellowships, courses, reading groups, hackathons, and events to help people contribute to making AI systems safer. AI Safety South Africa (AISSA) is a network and volunteer group supported by the CISAI operations team.
This policy explains what personal information we collect across our activities, why we collect it, and the rights you have over it.
We are legally subject to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) as a South African organisation. Operationally, we hold ourselves to the stricter standard set by the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): minimal collection, specific and unbundled consent for anything beyond the basics, clear retention limits, and real control for the people in our community.
Where POPIA and GDPR differ, we follow whichever is stricter.
CISAI NPC is the responsible party (hereto referenced as “the organisation” or “data controller”) for the personal information described in this policy. This policy covers both officially branded CISAI and AISSA events, programs, and public assets. This document describes how we decide and the reasons for which your information is processed, and our responsibilities for protecting it.

When you register for an event run by this organisation, Luma collects your name, email, and any event-specific details (dietary requirements, organisation, etc.). This data lives in Luma under their privacy policy.
